Make print work for you

Isn't it interesting how in this technological age we often focus on technological answers when very often all we need is same plain old brown paper wrapping, or a paper and pencil? While behind the scenes publishing good brochures, business cards and letterheads can be really hi-tech, neither me nor my customers need to be equipped technologically in order to make effective use of printed material. However, if these are not effective or detract from the image of my business, then I should rather not have anything at all. Professional graphic designs and well crafted wording can go a long way to presenting your business when you are not there to represent your business.

But how do you do this, and what is really important?

One really good place to start is your identity - the one you portray to the world... that which identifies you visually and speaks a thousand words. The logo!

A well crafted logo will be instantly recognisable, and communicate to your customers the type of business and the attitude of your company. Are you old fashioned, conservative, modern, with it, fast moving, solid or what? Colour, form and texture all play a roll - and so does size. As does the ability to be easily and repeatedly reproduced by printers in colour, and copied in black and white on a photo copier. Today, as important is the way in which the logo can be displayed on a computer screen which may give a very different effect to a paper-based image.

Before designing a logo, or having one designed, consider compiling a brief to your graphic designer. In this brief include:
  1. What type of business are you in?
  2. What logos do you relate to, or like, and why?
  3. What "mood" would you like to project to your clients?
  4. Is there any message you wish to convey in the logo design?
  5. What is the name of your company?
  6. Will you be using a trading name or abbreviation? Provide this.
With this, your graphic designer can then come up with some alternatives for your approval. Sometimes further changes are essential to get across exactly what you have in mind. But make sure that you have the right logo, a relevant logo -  since much of your stationery will be around for a while to come.

Logo design can be very expensive, so make sure that you own all copyrights. You don't want to have a situation where your logo's designer owns the rights to your logo after you have paid them for it! It may also be worthwhile registering your logo as a  trade mark at CIPRO. If you require this, Ross Fyffe & Associates can be of assistance to you too.
